Square Edge (SE) and Tapered Edge (TE) plasterboards are designed for different finishing techniques in construction:
-
Square Edge (SE): Features straight, uniform edges. Ideal for surfaces that will receive a full plaster skim coat, ensuring a smooth and continuous finish. Commonly used for ceilings and walls where skimming is planned.
-
Tapered Edge (TE): Edges taper towards the board’s face, creating a recess for jointing tape and compound. Suited for dry lining methods, allowing joints to be taped and filled for a flush surface without full skimming.
Installation
When installing square edge plasterboard, the joints between boards are usually reinforced with scrim tape and then covered with a jointing compound. After the joints have been prepared, a skim coat of plaster is applied over the entire surface to achieve a uniform finish. This method is preferred in projects aiming for high-quality, smooth walls and ceilings.
In contrast, tapered edge plasterboard features edges that taper towards the board’s face, creating a recess that facilitates jointing and filling. This type is ideal for dry lining techniques where joints are taped and filled, allowing for a flush finish without the need for a full skim coat.
Choosing between square edge and tapered edge plasterboard depends on the desired finish and method of decoration. For surfaces intended to be fully plastered, square edge boards are appropriate. For painted surfaces without a full plaster layer, tapered edge boards offer a more efficient solution.
